Kilauea the most active volcano on earth

On May 3,the volcano erupted dramaticallyseveral hours after a magnitude Geological Survey in Vancouver, Washington.

To the casual observer, Kilauea appears to be part of the larger volcano Mauna Loa, but geological data indicates that it is a separate volcano with its own vent and conduit system. Hawaii has five main volcanoes that are considered active. Take, for example, the geologically oldest—and now inactive— island of Kauai , which formed roughly five million years ago. The eruption also reshaped the island, forming a new black sand beach and even a short-lived baby island off its coast. Unlike most volcanoes, the Hawaiian chain sits squarely in the middle of the Pacific plate rather than on a tectonic boundary. Helens in Washington State — are usually taller and have more viscous lava flows with trapped gas that can generate volatile explosions. The whole crust covering the lake has just been overturned, exposing the red hot glowing interior. Hot magma deep within Earth may have heated carbon-rich rocks, releasing methane into the atmosphere and leading to an ancient warming event, scientists suggest.

The southwestern rift zone also lacks a well-defined ridge line or a large number of pit craters, evidence that it is also geologically less active than the eastern rift zone.

Hawai'i is the southernmost and largest of the island chain, which owes its existence to the very active Hawaiian hot spot. The eruption created a new vent, covered a large area of land with lavaand added new land to the island.

Staff writer Becky Oskin contributed to this article. Over the summer more than homes, a church and a store were buried beneath 50 to 80 feet 15 to 24 meters of lava. They could find no evidence of a single thermal plume.

Kilauea has been erupting continuously since and an uptick in volcanic activity that began two weeks ago has already destroyed at least 26 homes and caused thousands of residents to evacuate. Additional resources.
